Medieval times return to Silves

Residents and visitors to Silves will be able to travel back in time and experience the tastes, sights and sounds of the 13th century as the city hosts its sixth medieval fair from tomorrow (Saturday) until August 16.

Visitors to the fair will be able to purchase a variety of Moroccan goods, arts and crafts, jewellery, sweets and much more from stalls spread out through the historical city centre as well as eat at the medieval taverns and enjoy processions, live music and dance performances in the streets.

To make purchases at the fair more authentic, Silves Câmara has minted more than 6,000 Xelb coins.

Euros can be exchanged for Xelbs at the festival, with any unspent Xelbs being returned as euros. These coins are named after Silves’ Arabic name, Xelb.

During the festival, visitors will be able to hire a medieval outfit each day for the cost of two euros.

There will be three dressing rooms available in different locations of the historical city centre with more than 2,500 costumes for visitors of all ages to choose from.

A medieval tournament will also be held in the car park opposite the Al-Mutamid park each evening from 8pm.Tickets for this cost 3.50 euros and can be bought from 6pm at the location.
